The field of sociolinguistics acknowledges that language is not an aspect of human social behavior that is static, but rather adapts and changes according to the ways in which people adapt language to fit their needs and perceptions of the world around them. As this suggests, sociolinguistics can be defined as “the study of language in human society” (Sociolinguistics, 2002). This examination of sociolinguistics specifically looks at the use of Estuary English, its link to Cockney English, and how this topic demonstrates that dialects and accents are related to social distinctions within British culture. is complex and frequently misunderstood. A "dialect" is a "collection of attributes," such as "phonetic, phonological, syntactic, (and) morphological" attributes that differentiate one group of speakers from other groups of
speakers of the same language (Sociolinguistics, 2002). This is not a derogatory term as all speakers of any language all speak a dialect of their native language. Dialect is not
synonymous with accent, as accent is "only a part of dialectal variation," which refers to how words are pronounced (Sociolinguistics, 2002). As with the concept of dialect, it should be
noted that all language speakers speak with an accent of some type, "There is no such thing as a person who speaks without an accent," rather than accent-less speech, the
reality of this situation is that some accents are associated more closely with the accent that is perceived as the societal norm (Sociolinguistics, 2002). Furthermore, all speakers have an idiolect,
which is "the variety of language spoken by an individual speaker of the language" (Sociolinguistics, 2002). Over the last decade, there has been considerable attention paid to what linguist David
