While originally thought to be mainly caused by chemical imbalance and was largely treated chemically, it has also been found that depressive disorders are related to stress and other physiological
elements within a person as well. Scientists have also recently discovered that neurons which had previously been believed to remain stable over a persons lifetime and which are often damaged
during prolonged periods of depression can now be stimulated to cause new growth and redirect neurotransmitters in the brain. Until this research can be placed in the health system however,
physicians continue to treat depressions with a combination of pharmacological and psychological therapy which is immediately successful in over 70% of patients. Bipolar
disorder and depression are considered to be long-term illnesses requiring long- term treatments. For the past thirty years or so, lithium has been the major mood stabilizing medication used for
treatment of mood disorders although recently the introduction of carbamazepine and valproate have also been widely accepted to treat bipolar, depression and mania. While some antidepressant medications may be used

olanzapine, risperidone and quetiapine to help control manic episodes. In addition, it has been found that some medications which are commonly used to control epilepsy are also effective in some
bipolar patients (Simon, 2001). While medications may help to improve some of the mood disorder conditions, psychotherapies have been specifically designed to help with bipolar and depression. These therapies can
