ABSTRACT Diabetes is a difficult disease to control but is particularly problematic for the homeless. This literature review examines information about diabetes in general,
but focuses on how it manifests and is treated in the homeless population. Various modalities for treatment are discussed and the problems that the homeless population faces are highlighted.
Diabetes is a disease that people are becoming increasingly concerned about. They hear that if they gain weight, they are susceptible,
but on the other hand, most people realize that there is a heredity factor and that eating does not cause diabetes exactly. Some people believe that eating too much sugar
will cause the disease as well. These ideas are truths blended with myths and half-truths. The general population gets diabetes largely based on family history and lifestyle choices. The homeless
population is much more susceptible largely because they have a hard time taking care of their basic needs. First, it is important to look at the two types of diabetes.
Type one diabetes is actually an autoimmune disease. What happens is that prior to the onset of diabetes, the body is unable to cope with certain immune cells and they
