exploring diabetes, its causes and its treatments, it is first vital to explore the different types. There are two and they are fundamentally different. Type one diabetes is actually
an autoimmune disease. What happens is that prior to the onset of diabetes, the body is unable to cope with certain immune cells and they in turn attack the beta
cells that produce insulin ("Joslin," 2005). In addition, because the body cannot produce insulin, and therefore cannot use glucose, it is forced to obtain its energy from fat (Clayman, 1994).
One can see now why one symptom of diabetes is weight loss. The body is burning fat improperly. Many people like this side effect, but it can be quite harmful.
When the fat is burned in this manner, it produces ketones, which is a dangerous chemical (Clayman, 1994). With very high levels of blood sugar as a result of the
state of ketoacidosis, life can be threatened (Clayman, 1994). In Type two diabetes, things are different. Here, the beta cells located in the pancreas do not produce enough insulin
in order to meet the bodys needs, and this is in part attributable to the acquired decrease in beta cell mass (Rhodes, 2005). The cell mass at issue is something
that is controlled by a variety of mechanisms, inclusive of beta cell replication, hypertrophy and neogenesis (Rhodes, 2005). In comparing and contrasting Type one and Type two diabetes, the
