entry of Europeans to the Americas, however, the Native American world changed radically. Today elderly Native Americans face many of the same problems that are faced by the elderly
in general in our country. They also they face numerous unique health considerations, however, that further endanger their health. Native American cultures themselves, in fact, sometimes make addressing
their health care needs in the modern medical environment exceedingly more complex. The thesis can be presented that:
problems like diabetes can magnify largely unaddressed in the unique world in which these individuals live.
The problems directly associated with diabetes couple with the additional problems represented by poverty, poor communication with health care professionals and others responsible
for their long term health, alcoholism, and poor nutrition. Even the differences between traditional Native American culture and mainstream culture can serve to further complicate these problems. Many
elderly Native Americans suffering with diabetes, for example, may have been attempting to resolve their problem through prayer and ritual and perceive the harshness of the clinical environment as an
unacceptable challenge to their traditional beliefs. One of the biggest problems facing elderly Native Americans today is poverty. This is
particularly true for those elderly that live on reservations. Poverty is a fact of life on the Native American reservations as is alcoholism and poor nutrition. There is
