those cultures. The contention can be presented that, while the reasons that African Americans are more prone to developing diabetes are diverse, many of those factors largely revolve around
lifestyle factors that can be controlled. The purpose of this paper is to review the literature regarding diabetes, to identify the various factors that can contribute to ones propensity
to develop the condition, to sum up those factors in regard to how controllable they are, and to assess the strengths and weaknesses of two specific articles in regard to
what they contribute to the existing knowledge regarding diabetes as it impacts African Americans. In the US alone, some twenty million Americans suffered from diabetes
in 2005 (Deshpande, Harris-Hayes, and Schootman, 2008). African Americans represent a disproportional percentage of these individuals (Reaves, 2009). It might be suggested that the disproportionate impact that
diabetes has on these individuals is attributable to the fact that African American culture is less conducive to the type of self care that is needed to keep diabetes
under control and, in actuality, to even prevent is occurrence. While that may seem a contentious suggestion, continuing to ignore the facts not only puts more and more African
American lives in danger, it impacts the US as a whole given the inherent costs in treating diabetes and the various other diseases related to it, the lost time at
