last several years, there have been several randomized controlled studies in order to explore the effect of both behavioral and pharmacological interventions on the rate at which at-risk groups develop type 2 diabetes. This body of research demonstrates intervention can lower the number of people developing diabetes by 25 to 62 percent over a 3 to 6 year period (Buchanan 1502). Type 2 diabetes is a prevention requires modification of the underlying biological processes. In recently published diabetes prevention trials, three approaches were shown to mask, delay or prevent the development of type 2 diabetes. These were: 1) intensive lifestyle modification...which reduces body weight and, presumably, body fat; 2) thiazolidnedione drug, which reduce the impact of excess body fat on insulin action...and 3) metformin or acarbose, which reduces rates of glucose appearance in the circulation" (Buchanan 1502). At the present time, there are no approved medicinal interventions for diabetes prevention (Buchanan 1502). Considering this factor, lifestyle interventions are the most advantageous way to reduce the risk of diabetes development (Buchanan 1502). Lifestyle changes can either delay or prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes in individuals who are obese and exhibit impaired glucose tolerance (Pi-Sunyer 101). Risk factors decrease with weight loss and by increasing exercise. A decrease of just 7 to 10 percent from the baseline weight can have a beneficial effect on glucose tolerance and this fact has been documented in several empirical studies (Pi-Sunyer 101). In the Nurses Health Study, women who achieved a weight loss of over 5kg over a ten year period reduced their risk of diabetes by roughly 50 percent, which is a considerable benefit resulting from a modest weight loss (Pi-Sunyer 101).
