been a great deal of out of control children who have been labeled and put on medication. Keeping the classroom under control is a large dilemma today, but going back
to the years when teachers would receive apples and a discipline problem meant a smart alecky kid, there were true debates in education. They went to how children should be
educated in a democracy and how children learn best. The role of education was paramount, and that is also an issue which continues to be important today. Dewey highlights the
war between traditional and progressive education (17). First, he comes to a logical conclusion about the problem of traditional education. The people who have only lived in the past, take
what they know and have done, and simply hand it on to the next generation (17). Clearly, there is something wrong with that picture. After all, children should be taught
how to learn and how to think. If Dewey brought anything important to the realm of education, in addition to his Dewey decimal system he is famous for, it is
the notion that progressive, experienced-based education is pertinent and that traditional education is pass?. Dewey is also critical of organization, with its time schedules, and classification systems and rules
(18). Here, due to this, Dewey points out that schools are therefore markedly different than most other organizations (18). He talks about the culture of schools and how they
do prepare one for the business world, or at least that is what they say they do. They certainly groom children with both instruction and discipline (18). Dewey recognizes this
and while it is the case that perhaps the rules are there to groom the children for their future work lives, the truth is that they sometimes support antiquated principles.
