describes the effects of stress on nine bodily systems and suggests a program to mitigate these effects. What is Stress? Stress is "a feeling thats crated when we react
to particular events. Its the bodys way of rising to a challenge and preparing to meet a tough situation with focus, strength, stamina, and heightened alertness" (Lyness, 2004). The actual
incidents that provoke stress are known as "stressors," and they may range from actual physical danger to the "butterflies" that occur before we make a presentation. The body responds
to stress "by activating the nervous system and specific hormones. The hypothalamus signals the adrenal glands to produce more of the hormones adrenaline and cortisol and release them into the
bloodstream" (Lyness, 2004). The effect of this release affects all the systems in the body as it prepares to handle the "pressure of the moment" (Lyness, 2004). Because it affects
all systems, its easy to see why stress can be dangerous. Effects of Stress on Body Systems The effect of stress on the body depends in part on what
kind of stress it is. Acute stress refers to a condition that lasts only as long as a threat is present; when the threat disappears, so does the stress (Miller
and Smith, 2004). (This is the kind of thing that happens when another car runs the light; or theres a test in the morning.) Chronic stress is stress that is
on-going and constant, with no relief in sight. This type of stress might come from a bad marriage, or a job a person hates but has to keep. Stress here
