systems manifest themselves in the explanatory statements they offer for their orientation and behavior" (Durkin et al 306). Clearly, the Internet has made pedophilia that much more accessible -- and
anonymous -- thereby allowing for the study of an entirely different deviant perspective. Durkin and Bryant illustrate the importance of excuses (appeals to defeasibility, appeals to accidents, appeals to
biological drives and scapegoating) and justification (victim denial, injury denial, condemnation of condemners, appeal to loyalties, the sad tale, claim of self-fulfillment) by defining these types of accounts as primary
to a pedophile. While research is quite limited on the subject, the anecdotal, observational and limited studies of clinical and correctional pedophiles have provided a significant amount of data.
Findings indicate how one of the most common excuses pedophiles use to exonerate their responsibility for deviant behavior is being under the control of alcohol, followed closely by blaming
the child for putting forth a seductive demeanor. In short, the authors illustrate how pedophiles grasp onto a number of excuses and justifications as a means by which to
absolve themselves of having any control over their antisocial behavior, even going so far as to convince themselves that sexual relations actually benefit the children. "The claim-of-benefit account, which
