impossible to tell whether or not there is little information about these gangs because the U.S. tends to think only of its own problems, or if there just isnt much out there, but it was difficult to find useful information on this topic. Well look at some of the various gangs around the world, then consider sociological theories as to why gangs form. The first gang is one of the best-known in history, though the rise of women to the top of the ranks is something new: the Mafia. The particular incident that brought recognition to the changes within organized crime occurred in Italy in 2002. In the mid-1980s, prosecutors in Sicily put hundreds of Mafia suspects at once, including Giovanni Falcone and Paolo Borsellino (Israely, 2002). Falcone and Borsellino were later killed that same year, but by 2002, the Mob was developing a new face: its dons were well-educated young men with MBAs, and surprisingly, women were moving up the ranks (Israely, 2002). If anyone thought that the advancement of women in what surely must be one of the toughest gangs of all time meant that things would settle down, they got a rude awakening when in June 2002, a "30-year feud between rival families of the Camorra crime syndicate" exploded in a small town outside Naples (Israely, 2002, p. 32). The level of female violence perpetrated in the outburst was "unprecedented for the Italian Mob. After exchanging slaps and threats at the local Lauro di Nola beauty parlor last Sunday, several female relatives from the Graziano family cornered a car-load of women from the Cava clan and opened fire with automatic weapons" (Israely, 2002, p. 32).
