such as simple inappropriate social behavior (i.e. yelling in church) it generally is used to examine the condition of the individual and crime in society. The following paper examines the
concept of deviance as it relates to the writers own personal experiences. Deviance As mentioned, deviance is a sociological theory that
generally focuses on how or why people break from the social norms. While this is generally something utilized in understanding and analyzing crime it is also something that many people
may face in their daily lives as they never quite fit into the mainstream society that surrounds them. With that in mind the remainder of the paper will examine personal
deviance from a first person narrative as it involves this writers sister and her deviation from society. She had long felt that she
was outside the norm of society. She was not involved in criminal behavior, although she surely engaged in some illegal behavior as a teenager such as underage drinking and one
attempt at shoplifting. But, in truth, that could well be seen as the social norm, especially in the 70s when all teenagers engaged in such behavior at least once. Today
it is not really that different in relationship to teenagers "normally" engaging in experimentation and rebellion. But, aside from that normal, or deviant, social behavior she had always felt like
she did not belong in the middle class society in which she grew up. From as far back as she could remember she wanted to just head into the forests
and build her own log cabin and ultimately be a hermit. That is not a socially normal dream for most and as such could well be considered deviant.
