To do this, one must be aware of potential obstacles that might emerge at any given stage of psychological development. Obstacles can begin to emerge at any age. For instance, many psychologists believe that infancy and toddlerhood are the most important times in a persons life. Consequently, there are established "milestones" that a growing child is expected to meet, and failure to meet these milestones may well signify that something is amiss (Growing Child.com, 2012). For instance, at the age of 12 months, a child is generally expected to imitate the gestures it witnesses older people making, as a form of primitive communication, and to begin acting "affectionate towards familiar people"; by the age of 18 months, a child should begin verbally communicating (Growing Child.com, 2012). If these milestones are not met, it could well be that the child has some type of affective disorder, such as autism. Slightly older children are also expected to reach certain milestones. For instance, children roughly three to five years of age generally begin to exhibit the capacity to self-regulate their behavior. They no longer cry or lash out violently if their needs are not instantly gratified, and they can engage in social situation in a mutually enjoyable way, such as through sharing toys or experiences with other children in an unselfish way (Growing Child.com, 2012). Children who do not meet these self-regulation milestones may be exhibiting a tendency towards anti-social behavior that should be mitigated as soon as possible.
