many idea, all of which may take place simultaneously. The brain is not only reasonable for the creation and control factor, bur it is also a communication centre, however the
main function of the brain is often hypothesised as being that of survival and as such the early hominids that are examined display smaller brains which mayor may not have
had a more limited capacity. However physiology also appears to indicate that language and communication have also developed with the increase in brain size and complexity. The level of development
is high, but with this development we can also argue that the brain as an organ is inefficient, the brain will account for only about 2% of human bodyweight, yet
is required between 20% and 25% of the bodies total energy consumption (Crotty, 2002). The requires nutrition to operate; glucose and oxygen, the level of oxygen required is ten times
greater than any other organ, and as such the brain may be seen as taking a disproportionately high level resources compared to other organs. The evolution of large brains
must be a significant as there are many associated problem with the development of large brains. These include birth difficulties, potentially sore necks carrying the weight, as well as the
extra energy requirements. To understand why the brain of modern man is so complex and proportionately large we need to look at the range of theories to explain this development.
