For firms such as Amazon and eBay information technology (IT) and information systems (IS) are core aspects of operations, facilitating ongoing operations. However, IT and IS may be seen as
more than providing functionality required for operations; it has the potential to aid a firm in gaining, maintaining and leveraging potential competitive advantages. Assessing how IS and IT may provide
competitive advantages can be problematic, few models have been developed specifically targeting this area. Numerous different analytical frameworks may provide a foundation. For example, Porters generic strategies and Porters five
forces model as well as the resource based view approach may facilitate an examination of the organisation which may focus on IS. However, they are generalised frameworks. The aim of
this paper is to consider the way in which IS may be assessed within an organisation to determine the value it creates and how it may impact directly or indirectly
on the way the organisation develops competitive advantages. This will be undertaken by examining the way in which existing frameworks may be utilised to assess the position of an organisation,
and use these as a foundation to create a new assessment framework. The concept of competitive advantage looks at the way in which an organisation competes. Porter (1985, p13) has
designed two differing categories of competitive advantage; cost advantage and differentiation. These are the two strategic approaches which may be utilised by companies to gain an advantage over their rivals.
When looking at the way firms compete these different sources of competitive advantage may be placed into a meaningful context. For example, if an individual is considering buying two very
