also a tale of the development of one man, Lenaul Gulliver. although Swifts tale focused mainly on examining different structures of government and society, it was important to develop the
character of Gulliver in order to better illustrate the various societies. Bearing that in mind the following paper examines the character of Gulliver as it involves three different regions. The
regions discussed, as they involve Gulliver, are Lilliput, Brobdingnag, and Houyhnhynms. The paper presents the argument that Gulliver does not necessarily change as much as he grew wiser about the
existence and the efficiency of governments. Through his experiences he learns what is useful and beneficial, and what is without worth as far as systems of government are concerned.
Lilliput This is Gullivers first stop on his many journeys. He encounters these people, somewhat innocently, as he awakens to find himself tied up by many tiny people. He
quickly finds, however, that they are gentle enough, though power hungry to a large degree as they are involved in a war with people that used to be of their
city. We find that Gullivers character is relatively open to new ideas, and also relatively open to helping these people. But, first he must prove himself worthy of trusting:
"My gentleness and good behaviour had gained so far on the emperor and his court, and indeed upon the army and people in general, that I began to conceive hopes
of getting my liberty in a short time. I took all possible methods to cultivate this favourable disposition" (Swift Part I Chapter III). He was patient and tolerant, as
well as incredibly curious. Gulliver eventually obtains his freedom, helps the people of Lilliput in their battle against the enemy, and learns more of the culture he is immersed
