used in World War I, tanks are now found on battlefields around the world. This paper traces the development of French and German armor between World War I and World
War II. The Beginnings The British were the first to develop tanks; the requirements for the first such machine were that it be capable of going 4
mph, climbing a wall five feet high, crossing a gap eight feet wide, and carrying machines guns and "light cannon" (Tank history, 2004). The prototype was made by a
company called Foster, which produced a 14-ton machine called "Little Willie" and ironically powered by a Daimler engine (Tank history, 2004). It was clumsy and the planned turret was too
heavy to use, but it was the beginning; a 30-ton "Big Willie" was produced and 100 were ordered (Tank history, 2004). These tanks had the rhomboid shape that is
familiar to us from photos of the First World War. This shape, of course, would vanish over the years to be replaced by lower, sleeker models. The first use
of tanks on the battlefield was at the Somme in 1916, where 49 British Mk.I tanks made their appearance (Tank history, 2004). They were not a huge success: they
broke down and even when they were working, "were not capable of performing on a real battlefield" (Tank history, 2004). French tanks werent much better, but because they were
lighter they were able to climb steeper slopes; the chars Schneider could handle a forty-five degree angle (Tank history, 2004). The first time the French used tanks was April
