transition through all identified stages sequentially. What is different with Eriksons stages is that each presents a duality, a conflict that must be resolved successfully. If it is not resolved,
the individual will have problems with that area in their more adult years. This writer is at Eriksons Stage 6: Young Adulthood which spans ages 19 through 40 (Boeree,
2006). The conflict or crisis at this stage is Intimacy vs. Isolation (Boeree, 2006). These are the years during which the person is expected to learn how to develop long-lasting
relationships and love relationships (Boeree, 2006). Historically, it is during the early years of this age span, into about the mid-20s that people began developing strong relationships with potential spouses
or companions (Boeree, 2006). Society, as we know has change, and many people are waiting until they are closer to 30 to look for their life mate. As we
all know, people of all ages are busier today than they were four decades ago. Adolescents graduate from high school at about age 18, they enter college or other training,
and they are beginning their careers in their mid-20s. Competition in the market leads these folks to concentrate on their career. If true love happens to come along, thats fine
but otherwise, they are content with companions or short-term relationships. Erikson identified love and affiliation as outcomes of this stage (Harder, 2002). Individuals are interested in having "mutually satisfying
relationships" (Harder, 2002) during these years. That describes this writer. I have long-term friendships but no spouse and my goal is to complete my degree and begin my career.
