at the experience of loss and grief within the workplace. If the individuals in a workplace experience a catastrophic loss, then they will undergo the grief process, and the extent
to which they successfully navigate and resolve their process determines their ultimate effectiveness as employees in the future. In other words, employees who are unable to cope with the reality
of death and become mired in the grief process are unable to give their full commitment to their job, and the organization as a whole will suffer. This is especially
critical for those professions which have experiences with death and dying on a daily basis, such as nursing. It is critical for nursing practice that some strategic policy regarding bereavement
be created and implemented. By working to understand the grief process in all its various manifestations, organizational leaders can help develop an infrastructural support network whereby employees can not only
prepare themselves to cope with the realities of death on the job, but also deal more effectively with the grief process once it does occur. The goal is to reduce
"complicated grief" by assisting grieving individuals in naturally progressing through the grief trajectory, moving towards acceptance in a way that is personally meaningful and cathartic. Without such a strategy in
place, employees are left to their own devices to cope with grief, and organizational performance suffers as whole. This essay proposes the development of an organizational bereavement strategy based upon
the Kubler-Ross model of grief, while still retaining an awareness of the multifaceted expression of grief from one individual to the next. A method for identifying countless expressions of grief
within the framework of four basic categories (emotional, physical, behavioral, and psychological responses to grief), one is able to develop a strategic approach that is at once nuanced yet flexible.
