Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 3 page paper discussing means of measuring for quality. Measurement can be oriented toward function or financial results. In terms of function, the organization can assess product quality and reliability; it can assess the level of waste it generates in the production process; it can ask customers. The paper discusses benchmarking, gap analysis and six sigma as approaches to functional measurement. It concludes that organizations need to determine which metrics they will use and then use them to enhance competitive advantage rather than become too inwardly-focused. Bibliography lists 3 sources.

thing for an organization to claim it strives for quality; it is another to achieve it. Progress on the journey and evidence of success both can be found in
measuring activities, processes and outcomes. Two Broad Divisions Measurement can be oriented toward function or financial results. In terms of function, the
organization can assess product quality and reliability; it can assess the level of waste it generates in the production process; it can ask customers.
Regarding financial results, the organization can assess the returns it gains on a specific product, which may (or may not) indicate customers acceptance of it. Internally, financial assessment
can be used to indicate the presence of activities such as rework and repair. Deming (1986) demonstrated that when processes are brought under statistical control, then quality increases while
costs decrease. Quality Metrics Most measurements of quality do not exist in isolation, or at least are not useful in that frame of
reference. There are several approaches that provide indication of the organizations progress along the path of the journey to increased quality, however. Benchmarking
Benchmarking is one of these approaches. It consists of identifying processes needing improvement; comparing processes against those of another company that may not be in the same industry;
and analyzing collected data (Chase, Jacobs and Aquilano, 2006). Gap Analysis Benchmarking provides a view of where the organization is in some process
or set of processes relative to the benchmarked company. In a sense, benchmarking is a form of gap analysis. As it is commonly used, however, gap analysis refers
