Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 5 page research paper that explores the topic of encouraging critical thinking skills in new nurses. The writer outlines an excellent article (Ferrario, 2004) that argues that this goal can be facilitated through the introduction of concept maps. This idea is discussed. Bibliography lists 2 sources.

conferences, and grand rounds," where questions are posited that encourage reflective thought (Ferrario, 2004, p. 261). Today, there is less time for such exchanges as sicker patients are being
cared for during shorter time frames by fewer staff (Ferrario, 2004). This points to the need for new ways of developing nurses critical thinking skills, which Ferrario (2004) suggests can
be achieved through instruction in a technique referred to as "concept mapping." Ferrario begins her discussion of reflective thinking skills and concept mapping by outlining the boundaries of the
problem, that is, the need to develop critical thinking skills in new nurses. In general, staff development instructors face a daunting task in meeting the goal of developing decision-making skills
and associated critical thinking skills in the shortened time frames of todays health care environment (Ferrario, 2004). Strategies that are currently being used for this purpose have been criticized in
the literature because they only promote linear thinking. Ferrario reaches the conclusion that "...higher level thinking process--those that establish the interconnectedness between variables--and how to use these skills in stressful
situations, need to be taught" (2004, p. 261). Basically, reflective thinking refers to "objectively thinking about thoughts, feelings, and actions" (Ferrario, 2004, p. 261). However, before discussing concept mapping
as a solution to the problem of developing reflective skills, Ferrario defines reflective thinking as: a) analyzing, synthesizing, and evaluating what was done during patient care and; b) making decisions
about what to do the same or differently the next time--in the same or similar patient care situations (2004, p. 261). Questions that encourage new nurses to
think reflectively are: 1. "When you first examined the situation, what data seemed significant and why?" 2. "If and how do these data relate to any prior knowledge and
