ethics, particularly when one wants to consider the differences between and among ethics, morals, values and beliefs. It becomes a circular pattern. Beliefs underscore ones ethics, values and morals because
each is based on what an individual believes. Ethics and morals both have to do with right and wrong or good and bad acts (Bridges, 2001). People create moral
standards based on what they believe is right or wrong (Bridges, 2001). A value is something that is deemed to be worthy or right, such as an ideal or
a belief (Bridges, 2001). Moral standards, ethics and values are determined by individuals, groups, or the larger society, in general. For instance, the American Medical Association has a Code of
Ethics for its members who are expected to follow those tenets. My own ethics are based on my religious beliefs, which are Lutheran. This is true for many people because
religious training is a key foundation in the ethics and morals of any human being. Smith comments "[Lutheran ethics refers to] decisions made on the "narrow path" which Christians walk
resulting from right, intimate relationships with God" (2001). Ethical decisions are perceived as moral when they do not separate the Christian from his relationship with God (Smith, 2001). Based
on this description and my own upbringing and early training, my own decisions regarding right and wrong first considers if my decision, my action would separate me from the Christian
path. This path includes treating all people with compassion and never doing anything deliberately that would hurt another person. The two greatest influences in my development of my own
ethical code of conduct were my parents and my church. I attended Lutheran school from Kindergarten through the 8th grade. My family regularly attended church services. At home we followed
