UK Royal Collage of Nurses define it as "The use of clinical judgement in the provision of care to enable people to improve, maintain, or recover health, to cope with
health problems, and to achieve the best possible quality of life, whatever their disease or disability, until death" (RCN, 2003). Many other definitions exist, but a commonality in the development
of modern nursing theory is the perception of nursing looking after the whole person. This is also seen with theorists such as Henderson, Neuman, Rogers and Levine (George, 1990; Henderson,
1966). If nurses are playing a role in health maintenance and promoting wellness then it makes sense promoting healthy activities may be beneficial. Ulrich (1999) looked at the development for
a practical framework. Slide 3 The approach adopted by Ulrich was a theoretical approach, utilising triangulation for the development of a
framework for intervention to help improve the health of those suffering from cardio vascular disease. The triangulation used two concepts Orems self care deficit theory and The transtheroretical model of
exercise behaviour as well as allowing for the characteristics of those with CVD. These different influences serve to add dimensions as well as support the way in which the framework
is developed from different approaches. The triangulation is based on the concept of exercise, hence the inclusion of Orems theory, which gives information on the way that nurses perceive exercise
and how it may be incorporated into nursing care (Ulrich, 1999). The transtheoretocal model provide a framework for understanding behaviour and facilitates the use of knowledge to a practical framework.
