are many confusing elements in the profession that make it difficult to develop a clear and distinct identity. These authors identified two themes that relate to developing such an identity: the need for a systematic body of theory and the need to distinguish between similar professionals. There is a body of knowledge but there is not as clear a distinction between professions. A strong sense of professional identity can help the mental health counselor when things change in the field and even in the society. As society changes and as new information is gained the profession itself changes. However, ones own set of principles and values should not change. This is where a strong professional identity becomes essential and imperative. Developing My Own Professional Identity Developing a professional identity begins during formal education and training in the mental health counseling field. The tasks and responsibilities of the mental health counselor are enormous and they are complex. The counselor, for instance, must determine what specific approach would be best fit the problems of the clients. When the mental health counselor is working in a public setting, such as a country mental health clinic, they are likely to have numerous obstacles in helping clients. For one thing, given that setting, clients may just skip appointments. The mental health counselor is often part of a team working with a client. For this reason, it is important to gain information and knowledge about other fields, such as behavioral psychology, therapeutic strategies, and even medicine (Pistole and Roberts, 2002). Some of the many issues that I expect to help people with are stress, self-esteem issues, self-confidence issues, feelings of abandonment, parenting problems, marital problems, addiction, substance abuse, and any number of other mental health problems.
