can hope for is to deter crime through a variety of initiatives, with the goal of reaching as many as possible. There will always be those that no program
can help and who are too far beyond the reach of therapists, teachers, clergymen, and parents. But for the majority of criminals, crime a consequence of something missing in
their lives, and if we can just focus on giving them something more positive and if we can just instill a sense of personal value, then many would simply choose
not to participate in crime. The idea of deterrence is nothing new, but is gaining popularity in response to the
ever-growing crime statistics. The effects of deterrence vary according to the program, but there is much evidence to support the use of such initiatives and much to hope for
in terms of our youth. Understanding how these programs work is important since many more will likely be in place in the future. It simply will not be
practical to keep making arrests without trying to change the root cause of crime in the first place. That then is the goal of deterrence.
There are pros and cons to deterrence programs and some are far more effective than others. Comparing and contrasting these aspects requires a
thorough knowledge of the programs, since many are more effective for in certain instances and vice versa. Deterrence in the Criminal Justice System
