one hand there are many who feel it is not implemented enough and that the death penalty is the best approach to some criminal activity. On the other hand there
are many who claim that it does nothing to deter the criminal and as such should be abolished. The following paper examines the topic of deterrence and the death penalty.
Deterrence and the Death Penalty In recent times there has been a great deal of attack on the notion, and efficacy of the death penalty as it involves
deterrence. There are many who claim that it does not deter and that statistics clearly demonstrate this truth. One author presents the following in relationship to arguing against the death
penalty as a deterrent: "It doesnt deter. Prof. Ehrlichs evidence that every execution prevents another 8 lives was repudiated by Brian Forsts research" (Death Penalty Arguments & Internet Resources, 2008).
Yet on the other side of the issue lies those who argue that it is not deterring because it is not carried out swiftly enough (Death Penalty Arguments & Internet
Resources, 2008). In all honesty it does seem as though when the death penalty is part of a particular states way of punishing the criminal, the actual implementation of
the death penalty is rarely used and perhaps not used on a consistent basis involving particular crimes. Regardless, however, there is a great deal of evidence that clearly suggests the
death penalty does not serve as a deterrent. Many of the arguments that are connected to the deterrence, and the death penalty in general, involve such things as the
