characters in these stories. The ability of the characters to overcome that which supposedly defines them sets these plays apart and develops a genuine connection between the audience and
the characters. By relating to the influences in the lives of the characters, audiences can relate, and can better appreciate their ability to triumph over such conditions.
For instance, David Mamets, Oleanna, is the story of a teacher and his student, and their ensuing entanglements and sexual provocations. We
see through these characters the ways in which society has constructed politically correct ways of handling things and the absurdity of many of those ways. And yet, that is
the reality of our society. Therefore, Oleanna is a story that shapes its characters through such conventions. The "rules" and "expectations" of society play a huge role in
this story, and serve to very much influence the behaviors and actions of the characters. Carol is a bright college student and
John is her professor. These characters both illustrate extremes in terms of their outlooks based very much on the ways in which society has influenced them. For instance,
Carol is seeking help from her professor, but also knows how to manipulate the situation for her advantage. John provides Carol with the information he seeks, but is far
more impressed with himself than she is, and cannot help but see Carols attractiveness. The problems begin when Carol misinterprets something
that John says, and thus the accusations of sexual harassment begin. The audience is able to clearly see how both of these characters will use what means they have
