Discussion The duties of a detention officer are quite extensive and varied, and require someone who is flexible, compassionate and caring. Many young people who end up in the hands of the legal system are not dangerous criminals; theyve simply made a mistake. Its better at this stage to avoid sending them to adult prison and help them turn themselves around in a detention facility. To that end, the detention officer carries out many duties, including helping "to maintain a safe, secure detention atmosphere"; attending to the physical and emotional needs of the children; and monitoring group dynamics "to prevent fighting and escape attempts" (Leach). This means that the detention officer will have to be able to handle unruly children and have a good working knowledge of psychology to be able to spot the "ringleaders" in a group and defuse a potentially dangerous situation. The detention officer is also expected to "mediate disagreements between detainees," which again would call for some knowledge of psychology along with a knowledge of dispute resolution (Leach). Other duties of the detention officer including supervising the inmates as they do chores, eat, shower, play and sleep; he (or she) must also monitor them during their free time (Leach). He will also "frisk" detainees and conduct strip searches as necessary, as well as searching the facility itself (Leach). He has to "monitor detainees every 15 minutes during sleeping hours" and "restrain out of control youth" (Leach). He will take custody of youth from police; screen visitors; and complete necessary paperwork (Leach).
