range from dismissal to the filing of legal charges. As the old adage contends, however, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. While the best
alternative is to prevent plagiarism before it ever occurs, mechanisms must be in place to detect plagiarism when it does occur. Indeed, an unfortunate task that confronts those that
must stand guard against plagiarism is having to initiate measures that are effective in detecting any transgressions. The first step in preventing plagiarism
is making sure that everyone within your organization knows what constitutes the misuse of text or ideas that rightfully belong to someone else and that they know that there are
tried and true mechanisms that can detect plagiarism (Smith, 2003). Alert students in particular to the fact that your school is very aware of the existence of the so-called
"term paper mills" and that every effort will be taken to detect the students use of such services (Smith, 2003). The next step is the institution of a
professional code of ethics that stipulates not only what is expected but how the situation will be addressed if plagiarism does occur. For schools this professional code of ethics
often comes in the form of an honor code. Academic honesty is not only an expectation but for many schools a legal requirement. Honor codes are often in
