masterpiece. This paper discusses one sequence in the film: Susans decision to leave Kane and his subsequent destruction of her room. This scene underscores one of the films major themes:
that Kane is a collector, even of people, and needs to have his "possessions" around him. Discussion Susan is Kanes second wife, a pretty girl with a pleasant enough voice,
but without the technique, power, or skill to sing opera. She could have been enjoyable in an intimate nightclub, but shes out of her depth on the stage of an
opera house. Kane, however, has collected her the way he collects all kinds of objects: because shes pretty and ornamental. Hes spared no expense in teaching her to sing, even
build her an opera house in Chicago, but even he cannot turn an amateur into a gifted diva. When her debut and subsequent performances are a disaster, Susan tries to
commit suicide. Her desperation finally convinces Kane that hes pushing her for no good reason, and he agrees to let her leave the stage. They go to Kanes lavish Florida
estate, Xanadu, so Susan can recover. However, despite the fact that the place is huge and lavishly decorated, its also a prison, and Susan becomes bored with it, and with
Kane. She is much younger than he, and she misses New York and the good times they had there. Her dissatisfaction and discontent grow until one day when he has
arranged a picnic for their guests (there is a long procession of cars from Xanadu to the picnic) she confronts him in their tent. When he says he does everything
