of the countries were ultimately changed in many ways, ways that led to more prosperity and stability. The following paper examines the three countries individually. Mexico
In the 1990s Mexico suffered from many economic and social concerns. It was in the middle of the 90s, in 1994, that there came a
very important strain involving guerrilla warfare. One author notes how, "Mexican public opinion received the news with immense surprise and confusion. An Indian rebellion in Mexico, in the age of
NAFTA, near the end of the twentieth century? Inconceivable" (Krauze 779). This uprising was led by a man, and a group, that desired some powerful change. Krauze illustrates some of
their needs or demands: "The initial proclamations of the Zapatistas in 1994 mentioned no other goals but the removal of the dictator (Salinas), the defeat of the Mexican federal army,
social justice, and the formation of a free and democratic government" (Krauze 784). This uprising, however, did not last for long. In
Mexico the entire nation seemed in the midst of utter poverty after this time period, in the middle of the 1990s. What took place to change that was an agreement,
a free trade agreement, between Mexico, the United States and Canada which seemed to all but miraculously bring Mexico up and out of their depths of despair. This was the
