Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 5 page analysis of the ground-breaking study by Desmond Morris. In this book, Morris, a zoologist, approaches the study of human behavior as he might analyze any other species. It's an intriguing perspective that has gained a wide acceptance among scientists since The Naked Ape was first punished in 1967 and Morris uses this perspective to give considerable insight into human behavior. No additional sources cited.

zoologist and in The Naked Ape, he approaches the topic of human behavior from that standpoint, placing humanity squarely within the animal kingdom and looking at complex human behavior
just as he might analyze any other species. Its an intriguing perspective that has gained a wide acceptance among scientists since The Naked Ape was first punished in 1967.
The approach used by Morris, in analyzing humanity as an animal species, drew information from three main sources: 1) evidence from paleontology about the fossil record and the remains
of the first human ancestors: 2) information that is available from animal behavior studies which draws on studies in comparative ethology?especially studies concerned with humans closest animal relatives?monkeys and apes;
and 3) information from observation (Morris 13). His basic premise is that the wonderful cultural accomplishments of which humanity is so proud merely overlay a deeper truth, which is that
we are all basically naked apes. Morris argues that if you take modern man and strip away the "surface gloss" of civilization, he is still very much a primate ?"
An apes an ape, a varlets a varlet, though they be clad in silk or scarlet. Even a space ape must urinate" (Morris 21). The behaviors that human beings exhibit
toward courtship, pair bonding, mating, and raising young are far more complex then those ordinarily found in nature, but Morris argues?rather convincingly?that they are animal behaviors after all and, therefore,
operate at a very basic level. As mentioned above, some of his conjectures are based upon the theories of scientists as to what happened regarding evolution in humanitys remote
past. The chapter on humanitys origins is clearly based on such theoretical data. Where Morris observations really begin to make sense is when his direct observations as a zoologist come
