drives people to do many things and perhaps, more often than not, gets them into trouble. Desire drives kings and fools alike. The following paper briefly discusses the theme of
desire in Shakespeares "Henry V" and the ancient tale "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight." Henry V This particular story, like all of Shakespeares complex tales, involves many
characters and each one has some involvement in the story because of one type of desire or another. In light of this, for the sake of space we discuss one
characters desire. The character is Henry V who desires to take his presumably rightful place as king. This is a very crucial desire and a desire that essentially controls the
entire story. In one particular scene we see Exeter arriving to the King of France with irrefutable proof that Henry V is entitled to be king. This is perhaps
the point when the foundation of all further involvement takes place regarding battles and emotional plays. Exeter states "he greets your majesty./ He wills you, in the name of God
Almighty,/ That you divest yourself, and lay apart/ The borrowd glories that by gift of heaven,/ By law of nature and of nations, long/ To him and to his heirs;
namely, the crown/ And all wide-stretched honours that pertain/ By custom and the ordinance of times/ Unto the crown of France" (Shakespeare II iv). He offers up the genealogy of
Henry V so that no dispute can exist. This is a very powerful statement that clearly indicates how Henry V desires to be king. His desire is so great,
in fact, that Exeter warns that if the King of France does not heed this claim then war will surely result: Bloody constraint; for if you hide the crown/
