interpret them, based on Frye and McIntoshs theories of oppression and privilege. Discussion The first thing the student will want to note is that the assignment specifically mentions that the
subject must be a woman, 50 or older. There is obviously a reason for this, so the first thing to do is consider what this subject might be like, and
what she might have experienced. First, she will have been born in 1956 or earlier, before women were in the work force in large numbers, before the first space flight
(in 1961, Yuri Gagarin became the first man in space), before personal computers, the Internet; even before jet passenger planes were commonplace. She will have seen the beginnings of the
Womens Movement and the Civil Rights Movement and the development of a technological civilization and globalization. She has lived through what is probably the most innovative 50 years in human
history. There is far too much material to cover, so the questions will have to be chosen carefully. Reflection might lead the student to consider questions about her experience as
a woman in the workforce, her thoughts about the struggle for civil rights, and technology as perhaps the most appropriate. This is a very rich field and there is no
wrong choice. But lets go with these. Lets have the student ask her questions like these: "Do you feel you have been given appropriate opportunities for advancement in your career?"
