Essay / Research Paper Abstract
A 10 page paper discussing issues surrounding product reliability, and suggesting a reliability program for upper-end audio products. The request results from increased market competition, and the aim of the reliability program focuses on that competition as well. Bibliography lists 7 sources.

Biologists Leonid Gavrilov and Natalia Gavrilova have turned to reliability engineering as a means of understanding human aging and predicting the rate at which human bodies approach death. The
Gavrilovs believe that "reliability theory is so general that it can be applied to understanding aging in living organisms as well" (Human reliability, 2004; p. 66). In both electronic
and biological human systems, "failure follows a curve of infant mortality, normal working, and aging" (Human reliability, 2004; p. 66). For both, death "rates are high during infant mortality
and drop to a low constant rate during the normal working period" (Human reliability, 2004; p. 66), increasing exponentially during that period but then plateauing at advanced age.
The lesson for increasing the reliability of electronic audio equipment lies in two areas. First, the manufacturer needs to strive to reduce the high
"infant mortality" rate of the time immediately following production. Next, it needs to strive to reduce the likelihood of failure during the normal working period. Though products can
be expected to decline in reliability as they age, consumers should be able to expect audio components not to rush into failure at exponential rates.
Though marketers and non-consumer stakeholders might believe that reduced reliability could lead to increased sales in the future, such has been shown not to be the case.
Certainly the consumer whose laptop or CD player fails is likely to buy another, but s/he is not likely to buy another of the same brand. Though reduced reliability
can indeed lead to increased sales, the increased sales it contributes to are those of a competitor. The purpose here is to develop and integrate a reliability plan for
