a broad investigation, such as in the case of a city-wide crime phenomenon, is a much more subjective and analytical process. Law enforcement officials planning wide-scale investigations must handle issues
relating to police coverage, the use of technology, the assembly of investigative teams, and how best to actively engage the public in the investigation in a productive manner. This paper
will explore how the typical broad investigation is planned, using a hypothetical example. This paragraph helps the student introduce the hypothetical situation which the plan will arise. Suppose that one
were newly appointed the chief of ones department in the City X police force. This promotion brings with it immediate responsibilities, such as the need to investigate and bring
an end to a string of daytime robberies that have recently occurred in the area. The first step in the investigative process is to look at existing police reports and
other data related to the robberies which have already taken place. The locations of each attack should be mapped, and details from witnesses, such as descriptions of perpetrators, should be
indexed for similarities. After gathering a great deal of information related to the previous robberies, one can begin to synthesize this data in such a manner that it can
be used to narrow the scope of the new investigation, to increase the likelihood of the investigation having a successful outcome. In addition to analyzing police report data for trends
and similarities, one might take a note from the extensive investigation of the 1997 Chicago bank-robbing epidemic, wherein police conducted qualitative interviewed with convicted bank robbers in order to gain
