Amazon is a well known firm, operating in many markets, with an organizational design and structure that has facilitated organic growth and the ability to leverage both first
mover advantages, efficient supply chain management and economies of scale. Looking at the firm and the structure and the way that this has evolved helps to give an insight into
the firms success. Slide 2 The firm, founded by Jeff Bezos, was initially built with the idea of expanding.
The idea saw Bezos launch a firm online to sell book, which required not only an online presence, but also bricks and mortar assets, with a warehouse to store and
distribute the goods when been ordered. The goods sold initially were easy to store and to package, and as demand grew, so did the range of goods and the services.
The company now sell a broad range of goods, included CD and DVDs electrical equipment and household goods and even automotive parts. The development of the Kindle as a ebook
reader has help to create and expand the market for ebooks, which are a complementary sale item, and effective as the books are not physical books and allow for high
levels of efficiency on the supply chain. Other digital downloads are also available, including music and television programs. The company has undertaken an interesting form of diversification with Amazon market
place allowing other selling to market and sell their goods along side Amazons own goods, and Amazon selling good that they do not have to store, with the goods sent
