The connection between social theories and psychological elements has underscored the multidisciplinary approach for developing theories related to socialization. Uri Bronfenbrenner, social psychologist, defined his ecological systems
theory based on the desire to identify the social entities and subsequent factors related to social development that have an impact on development and subsequent behaviors. Bronfenbrenner was born
in early 20th century Moscow and moved with his family to the United States when he was a young child. Bronfenbrenner applied his ecological systems theory to his focus
on the early education of young children, including a focus on social service programs that integrated early intervention programming. The ecological systems theory developed by Bronfenbrenner identified ecological factors,
especially those that occurred during foundational stages in childhood that played a major impact on how children perceive themselves in the world and their essential motivations in regards to decision-making.
It was Bronfenbrenners contention that there are three essential components to the ecology of personal development: the microsystems (small, focused individual influences), mesosystems (the communities) and macrosystems (the
dominant culture or cultural affiliations as a whole) (Paquette & Ryan, 2001). Bronfenbrenners theory was based on the philosophical structure of functionalism, which related the focus on a concrete
view of the systems and factors that impact the development of the mind. The philosophical premise was linked to the assessment of human development within distinct systems and as a
component of the functional elements of social development, the interconnection between man, others, the environment and social structures. This philosophical perspective linked specific thoughts, views and behaviors not to
an existing internal constitution, but to the cumulative impacts of micro and macro environments, socialization and the specific expected roles imposed upon the individual by our societal influences (Ludwig, 1998).
