Desdemona is a young and na?ve girl who has been raised in the sequestered environment of privilege, as the only daughter of the widowed Venetian Senator Brabantio. To her father, Desdemona was a precious jewel, the embodiment of purity without a flaw (Hall 55). It is suggested that relations between father and daughter were formal and impersonal, that Desdemona was regarded by her father more like a possession than as a human being. However, Desdemona had a mind of her own and when she fell in love with and eloped with Moorish military commander Othello, it was the ultimate act of rebellion. The young fair Desdemona had married a middle-aged man of color. Brabantio was enraged, but reacted not so much as a concerned father but as a victim who had been robbed. He bitterly lamented to his daughter, "For your sake, jewel, / I am glad at soul I have no other child; / For thy escape would teach me tyranny / To hang clogs on them" (I.iii.213-216). Perhaps if he had guarded his bauble more carefully, rather than proudly displaying her as he did during the fateful dinner when the guest at the Brabantio table was the victorious General Othello, his treasure could not have been seized. How did Othello view his new wife? His life, up to that point, had been spent nearly exclusively on the battlefield. His military prowess had given Othello his identity and the respectability he craved, but in society, he was still treated as an outsider. In Desdemona, the well-connected social insider, Othello believed he had finally gained entry into what had been an elitist club of white Venetian aristocrats. ...
