one that is very much about women. Without these women the story of Othello, Iago, and the deadly emotion of jealousy would not exist. With that in mind the following
paper analyzes the characters of Desdemona, Emilia, and Bianca. Desdemona, Emilia, and Bianca It is quite clear that Desdemona is perhaps the most important female character in the play
if only because it was lies about her which led Othello to kill her. Without her there would be no story. But, she is also the one of the three
women who is the most innocent and na?ve. She really has no concept of the notion of adultery and even fully gives herself over to Othello, to be killed, and
thus shows her complete lack of understanding of the complexity of jealousy and adultery. She cannot honestly believe he truly thinks that of her for she has no experience with
it. In relationship to the handkerchief she is seemingly confused at his jealousy and suspicion about it, telling Emilia, who tells Desdemona
Othello is jealous, "I neer saw this before. Sure, theres some wonder in this handkerchief: I am most unhappy in the loss of it" (Shakespeare III iv). She further illustrates
her innocence and lack of understanding in her words as she dies, words that do not even point to Othellos guilt as Emilia asks her who did this: "Nobody; I
myself. Farewell Commend me to my kind lord: O, farewell!" (Shakespeare V ii). It is quite clear that Desdemona is a very
