discusses what a descriptive essay is, and then gives an example. Descriptive Essay A descriptive essay has "one, clear dominant impression. If ... [the writer is] describing a snowfall, it
is important ... to let ... [the] reader know if it is threatening or lovely; in order to have one dominant impression it cannot be both" (Writing descriptions, 2004). The
dominant image guides the writers "selection of detail and is thereby made clear to the reader in the thesis sentence" (Writing descriptions, 2004). A descriptive essay can be either subjective
or objective; that is, either a discussion of the feelings aroused by an object or event, or a straightforward description of the object or event (Writing descriptions, 2004). Finally, the
purpose of the descriptive essay is to "involve the reader enough so he or she can actually visualize the things being described" (Writing descriptions, 2004). There are conventions to this
type of writing, as well. First, its important to remember that we have five senses, not one or two; the writing is more vivid if all senses are engaged (Writing
descriptions, 2004). Second, details are important; so are emotions (Writing descriptions, 2004). Finally, unless the essay is objective, the dominant impression should convey an attitude (Writing descriptions, 2004). All that
said, lets look at Mt. Hood. Well begin with an objective overview and then consider what the mountain means, subjectively. Mt. Hood is the highest mountain in Oregon at 11,235
feet; it is the "4th highest in the string of Cascade Mountain Range volcanoes that stretch from Mt. Garibaldi in British Columbia south to Mt. Lassen in Northern California" (Fascinating
