paper properly! Introduction Giuseppe Verdi (1813-1901), the Italian operatic composer, created "La Traviata" in 1853. In the nearly 150 years since that time, it has become one of the
best-known and most frequently performed operas in the Western world. He had been commissioned by the Teatro La Fenice in Venice to create a new opera and chose to
focus on a contemporary theme, "La Dame aux Camelias," which was based on a story by Alexandre Dumas. Supposedly, the character of Violetta was based on the real-life courtesan Rose
Alphonsine Plessis, known as Marie Duplessis in the demimonde of society that she inhabited. The Romance of the Story The story revolves around the courtesan Violetta Valery. In the
first act, she welcomes a number of guests to her Paris salon. They include Flora Bervoix, Marquis dObigny, Baron Douphol and Gastone, who introduces a new admirer, Alfredo Germont who
admits to having adored the beautiful Violetta from a distance. He offers a toast when she asks and she joins him in his pay his respects to pleasure. As her
guests move into the ballroom, Violetta, suddenly feeling faint, remains behind. Alfredo returns, concerned about her, and ardently declares his love ("Un di felice"). At first, Violetta protests that love
means nothing to her, but Alfredos sincerity touches her, and she gives him a camellia, her own unique emblem, promising that he may return to see her when the flower
