this is impossible given the scientific parameters of life as it is known on Earth. Thus, in contemplating life, science seems to explain everything. Of course, many in the realm of religion would beg to differ, negating even simplistic notions of Darwin, but in the scheme of things science is generally accepted as a way to prove something is true or not. And while religion can fill some gaps, it is prudent to remember that even there comes the concept of the doubting Thomas. Doubt and skepticism is quite natural and it is only through questioning that is seems the truth may be derived. There is the scientific method. There is deductive reasoning. Greek logic in fact has been construed as being wholly deductive (Russell, 1945). A deductive argument assumes that if all notions are true, the conclusion must be true. Yet, there are discussions in the realm of social science for example in regard to whether or not human behavior can be measured, and in the humanities there are arguments that go to reasoning. Even a proof that one exists is demanded in the realm of philosophy. Many scientific and religious precepts have the common feature that they do not assert any observation sentences (Yancy, 1995). And in fact, science and philosophy truly have a lot in common. Both scientists and philosophers are skeptics and within the study of philosophy there are certain methods of deducing truth. One might say that Descartes is one of the most skeptical of all, and in fact, had devised a formal system of doubt in the philosophical realm. In fact, Descartess role in history is monumental.
