In the Meditations, Descartes considers the notions
of truth and illusion, and the way in which human beings can distinguish between certainty and belief with regard to the way in which they interpret sensory impressions and the
extent to which such impressions can be considered as constituting reality. He attempts to establish what can be discounted, in terms of ones experience, as potentially illusory, and what remains
as a certainty when all such deceptions have been removed. In this way he examines the falseness of perception and the notion of consciousness before finally arriving at the concept
that God must exist as a prerequisite for both consciousness and illusion.
In the First Meditation, for example, he begins by stating that he is no longer going to rely on the foundation on which all
his previous beliefs had rested, since he intends to analyse philosophically whether these beliefs are in fact valid, and if they are not, to discover if there is anything which
can be construed as a valid and verifiable belief. He points out that this previously conducted framework of belief has been based on his experience of sensory data, and that
such data has been proved false on other occasions. Therefore, it is not to be relied upon as something which deserves unconditional belief.
