Bibliography lists 3 sources. SA145Des.rtf A case study involves a friend telling someone that he knows he will do well in his philosophy class. How can he know that ? The friend of course questions the assumption and rightly so. How can one be absolutely certain of the future? The friend wants to know if he has conclusive evidence for the claim and when the friend admits that he does not, the other friend tries to clarify his initial intent. It is suggested that the friend is just simply asking too much of the concept of knowledge. He says that the word is being misused in order to make it easier for him to claim that he knows things. At first glance it seems as if a student could not say with certainty that he will do well, but the problem is more complex than it appears on the surface and requisites philosophical thought. How might Descartes for example deal with the problem? A student writing on this subject will want to point out that the primary dilemma is not whether or not knowledge is held regarding the outcome of a class. Instead, the problem is whether or not knowledge exists at all. How does anyone know anything? Perhaps life really is a dream as noted in the classic Row Your Boat song.
