exist on the other side. It is a comforting thought. It is aligned with the idea that death is not a reality. It is merely a perception. Of course, most mainstream religions teach that this is the case and that death is only the death of the body. After the body dies, the soul will live on. Descartes addressed issues of body, mind and soul. He saw the body and mind as distinct substances that merely interact with each other. On some level, this is an idea that is aligned with thought that does see the soul as distinct but this can be a problem. After all, there is a case to be made for seeing mind, body and soul as connected and not separate. Some claim that the brain is really responsible for everything that occurs at the point of death. There have been studies done to try to negate the concept of the near death experience. That is, people report floating through a tunnel and going toward the light, but scientists see this common experience as tied to synapses that fire in the brain. It is true that the brain contributes a great deal in terms of regulating peoples ideas and moods. Also, the desire for immortality may be attached to the brain. This idea paints the human being as nothing more than a living creature prompted to act by physical processes. Yet, some believe that they are more than that. Such individuals see themselves as having a soul that goes beyond what the body can accomplish. Still, the problem becomes magnified when one examines mind experiments.
