the lens of Descartes Meditations. Discussion The easiest way to tackle this is probably to find out what Descartes says about a subject, and then describe how the filmmakers have
represented it on the screen. Descartes Meditations describing his thinking on the existence of God, the survival of the soul, and the distinction between mind and body. In other words,
he is concerned in large part with the nature of perception, and that is precisely what the film examines. The first thing to consider is the method of doubting
to find truth. This is, in broad terms, what Descartes did. He took the position (a brave one) that it was possible that everything he believed was wrong. From there
he went on to demonstrate why the things he believed were in fact true, but he started from a position of doubt. The movie does the same thing: it leaves
everything open to question, and the audience isnt sure whats real and what is false until at least 30 minutes into the film. The film introduces viewers to what
seems to be a rather ordinary young man in an ordinary techie job, but it soon reveals that hes doing something illegal on the side. The first glimpse of something
essentially wrong is when words appear on his computer screen-something that should not happen-and hes told to "follow the white rabbit" (Silver, Wachowski & Wachowski, 1999). Then the words appear,
"Knock, knock" just as someone knocks on his door (Silver, Wachowski & Wachowski, 1999). This immediately sets up a question in the audiences mind: details about this world are still
very sketchy, but no one should be able to talk to another via computer and predict whats going to happen. Either someone is watching him, or knows whats going to
