Descartes and Siddhartha/A Comparison : An 8 page comparison between Rene Descartes' seventeenth century masterpiece, Meditations on First Philosophy, and Hermann Hesse's novel, Siddhartha. Descartes' work attempts to reshape the way knowledge is processed and evaluated with a view of reality that is grounded in the physical. presents an allegorical tale of a young man who leaves his home and his parents in order to embark on a spiritual quest to find the meaning of life and
truth through the hard life of an ascetic. Descartes work attempts to reshape the way knowledge is processed and evaluated with a view of reality that is grounded in the
physical. The other work is a tale of spiritual exploration that explores the beliefs of Buddhism. Yet, there are similarities as well as differences between the two books because the
spiritual realm and the physical realm can never be completely separated. Descartes addresses the spiritual realm in his speculations as to the way in which God interacts with his
creation and Siddhartha finds he must first immerse himself in the physical world in order to be fully free to pursue the spiritual. Based on their differing perspectives and the
context of the two works, it is possible to speculate on how the two would interact with each other, across the barriers of time and space-- the factual historical figure
and the imaginary Eastern mystic. Descartes criticism of Siddhartha One can imagine that Descartes, first of all, would establish a common ground between the two before launching into
his criticism. He might comment that, like Siddhartha, he too was concerned with the spiritual nature of life and the true nature of reality in formulating his philosophy. "I have
