The most classic of these debates, however, is the rationalism verses empiricism debate which dominated much of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. This debate was fueled by the energies of many philosophers. Among the most notable of these is Renee Descartes. Rationalists like Descartes maintained that synthetic judgments could be absolutely certain and that we could use radical doubt to thoroughly test knowledge and allow it to serve as a new indubitable basis for science. In Part Four of his "A Discourse on Method, Meditations on the First Philosophy" Descartes writes: "As I desired to devote myself wholly to the . . . search for truth, I thought that I should . . . reject as absolutely false anything of which I could have the least doubt, in order to see whether anything would be left after this procedure which could be called wholly certain". Descartes, the man who holds the informal tittle of the "father of modern philosophy" was intent on raising philosophical debate above the aesthetic and theological interests which had held it captive for the early centuries of mankinds existence. He was a proponent of the deductive process and of a system of self-evident truths which were free from doubt and dispute. Each of these compliment his theory of radical doubt add to that discipline that we know as science.
