reading good books can be seen as having some degree of ambiguity, when taken in the context of his search to discover the truth about the world and about human behaviour. He notes, for example, that the material which is found in books is in a sense a false presentation of the world of the authors; the conversation which one has with such an author is, as he comments, one which is carefully couched in order to reveal none but the best of their thoughts. The picture which the author presents of their world, or of their attitudes towards their culture, is not therefore considered as entirely accurate, but deliberately structured to as to present a particular viewpoint. In addition, the best of the authors thoughts does not necessarily imply that they are giving the best picture of the society which they describe - a satirist, for instance, will not offer an impartial view of society but one which is constructed to offer a particular perspective. Goldings Lord of the Flies, for example, gives a view of civilised society which is by no means optimistic. He takes a group of children, most of whom have been brought up in the upper echelons of society and might therefore be expected to represent the cream of that society, and demonstrates what is likely to occur when such a group is released from the normal constraints and barriers which govern social behaviour. ...
